Yeah, yeah, I'm still here. :D

The title of my post totally belies its content, which is hopeful and positive. The title is just something I had to say. That's cryptic and I apologize. Everything else is on the up and up!

The reason I haven't been blogging is I managed to break Semagic -- upon which I am hopelessly dependent for making LJ posts -- and I didn't know how to fix it. The problem was that the whole bottom half of Semagic disappeared -- the post button, the preview button, icon selection, mood, location, the clock ... all that. I tried all kinds of things to try and restore this part of Semagic and was completely unsuccessful. Even my husband threw up his hands, and he's an IT manager. But tonight I sat down, determined to fix this thing. I went through every link and drop down menu I could find, and finally I found the right selections to restore the sections of Semagic that had disappeared. Thank. GOD. Now I can continue to bring you the wacky hijinks that is my so-called life!

When we last left off my son had had his first kiss. Onward ho.

My sixteen-year-old son had his first kiss tonight at the Homecoming bonfire with his first girlfriend (who is a senior; he is a sophomore). I was thrilled he so readily told us he and his girlfriend had a kiss (I never told my parents a thing about my intimate escapades!). After he started dating his girlfriend, DH and I decided to have a sit down with him and talk about, basically, personal responsibility -- sexually, emotionally, physically, etc. I've already provided him with quite a few books on sexuality and puberty, but her's not much of a reader. So! The Talk. And, I suppose, a healthy supply of condoms, just in case. I don't want him to start having sex, but realistically it's a possibility -- apparently the average age of a teen's first sexual experience (by that, I mean intercourse) is seventeen, so yeah.

But,, SQUEE! First kiss! <3

Love Grows Here. Excerpt: As part of a growing nationwide movement toward marriage equality the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin Foundation and the national ACLU’s LGBT project have challenged our state’s restrictions on marriage in Federal Court. [...] People who give of themselves to move human rights forward are always seen as the bright spots of their time in history books. The reality is that few are treated that way during their lives. [...]

As we make our attempts to show kindness across all boundaries, what we’ve found at the heart of all inequality issues is that those on the privileged side of the divide have always been raised to believe that their privilege makes sense because they are the good people, the moral ones, the heroes.
By giving a glimpse of the incredible moral decency of Pat and Dennis [a gay couple] we challenged lifetimes of belief. We lost customers. We understood that would happen. But it’s what happened since that has us so joyful.

I've shopped at Penzeys spices for about six years, on the recommendation of jlh, and have always been pleased with their excellent quality spices and spice blends. It warms my heart to see the above declaration prominently displayed on the front of their home page (the whole statement/story is a great read) and I encourage you to try Penzeys spices, if you don't use them already. Some of the blends I like are Mural of Flavor, Fleur de Sel, Florida seasoned pepper, Barbeque 3001, shallots, Foxtrot seasonings, Sandwich Sprinkle, celery salt, and their minced garlic.

These are the kinds of businesses we need to support! I live three blocks down from a Hobby Lobby -- they, of course, will never see my business. I will gladly pay shipping and handling charges to Penzeys online, or shop at the two Penzeys stores here in the Denver Metro area, to support a business that in turn supports marriage equality so strongly. So, go forth and get your spice on!

... I dreamed that God would be forgiving ...

Like most of you (I daresay), I was shocked and deeply saddened by Robin Williams's death yesterday. I have loved Robin Williams as an actor since I was in elementary school. I remember I had this pair of pajamas -- with bloomer shorts and a short-sleeved shirt -- made from some kind of itchy polyester, and how they scratched my sunburned skin one summer. On the front was Mork's smiling face, his hand held up, fingers spread: Nanu Nanu! I also had an egg-shaped Mork from Ork transistor radio and when I think of it, Another Brick in the Wall, Funkytown, Tainted Love, Don't You Want Me Baby, and Abracadabra come to mind. It seems so long ago. Well, it was so long ago, now, wasn't it?

Among other shitty things that have happened since mid-March (I'll save those for a different post, which I'm sure is thrilling to all!) I fucking totalled my car on the 11th. And to add insult to injury, the accident was unequivocally my fault. Long story short, I rear-ended someone, who subsequently rear-ended the car in front of him. This was on a busy, busy main thoroughfare and people driving by sure didn't stop to help, unless you count, "GET THE FUCK OFF THE ROAD!" or "FUCKING PULL OVER!" and incredible amounts of long episodes of being honked at by people passing by, as help. I do not consider that help. We couldn't pull off to a side street because our bumpers were somehow hooked together and it was clear my car was not driveable -- the radiator cracked open and all my coolant drained out. Fortunately, the people who I hit were incredibly gracious and I was so mortified.

I was injured, but I don't know what level to gauge it at. I hit both knees really hard on the dash and got massive bruising from that. I also had a seatbelt-shaped bruise from shoulder to hip and slightly across my stomach. I cut my hand open. My new knee is basically okay, but is still sore. I had a little back pain for a week, but that's resolved. I somehow managed to bruise my right foot -- maybe it hit the gas pedal in a weird way or something. Anyway, I'm still quite bruised, but I'm sure I'll feel fine in no time.

Dudes, my air bags did NOT deploy :| I haven't even begun to really wrap my head around that fact.

Pics of the old black car and my new white car can be found here. I'm scared to drive and have only driven once since getting the new car. I'm not really very excited about having a new car, but please don't misunderstand -- it's not because I'm not incredibly grateful for the car, and grateful that I didn't hurt anyone but myself. I just think it's because I'm scared and it takes me a while to work through fear.

My old black Civic was a 2001 and only had 70,000 miles on it. My new white Civic is a 2011 with 36,000, which is 9,000 more miles than the old black Civic had on it when we first bought that car back in 2005, so I hope to continue to maintain low mileage on my vehicle.

Someone joked to me about my old car, after seeing the pics, "You do know you're supposed to remove the snow before driving, right?" :P

My son will be sixteen on the 4th. He's getting these boots for his birthday:

He was talking to DH about boots:

DS: I love these boots. *points to boots he found online somewhere*
DH: Aren't those kind of goth?
DS: What's wrong with being a goth?
ME: YES! SUCCESS! I SHALL PREVAIL!

I'm making him a goth/EBM/Industrial playlist on YouTube :D

I signed up to be notified when certain usernames were purged from LJ and made available for use and I was just notified that dracomalfoy has come up. So if anyone wants the username dracomalfoy for any reason, try and get it before someone else snaps it up. < /PSA>

ETA: I see it's showing up with a strike-through, but I'm just reporting the information I received from LJ, which says it is available. Other than that, I don't know. :|

I'm looking for these pretty jewelled ornament holders/hooks used to hang ornaments on the Christmas tree -- I think I got these at Target, but I can't find them on Target's site now, and Amazon doesn't seem to carry them either (that, or my Google-Fu is failing me). Have any of you seen these ornaments hooks anywhere online? If so, can you point me? Here's the ornament hooks:

Yeah, I have the regular kind, but I'd really love to get my hands on the jewelled ones. Please let me know if you know where to find them!

This probably isn't news to anyone by now, but as a fan who never actively shipped Ron/Hermione, I am fascinated by J.K. Rowling's revelation that, in hindsight, Ron and Hermione just might not have been ultimately compatible. Now, without getting all batshit, as a fan whose first favorite pairing was Harry/Hermione, I appreciate this vindication. Here's what JKR said to Emma Watson, who conducted the interview:

JKR: I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.

I know, I’m sorry. I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.

EW: I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make [Hermione] happy.

And to twist the basilisk fang she just stabbed shippers in the collective heart with, Rowling added that as it is, Ron and Hermione would probably need relationship counseling.

What I most appreciate about J.K. Rowling's comments here is that she is acknowledging the "love/hate" relationship trope is actually not impervious; a lot of fans, myself included, found it a bit galling to constantly be told that Ron and Hermione's constant bickering and sometimes outright cruel barbs was a sign of love. I'm not sorry to say this: those types of behaviors are not demonstrative of a loving, caring relationship, and I hope J.K. Rowling's acknowledgment that Ron and Hermione very well might have needed couples' counseling helps to crush the rose-colored belief held by a certain segment of the Potter fandom that unhealthy interpersonal dynamics should be considered ideal and/or romantic. Emma wonders if Ron could have ultimately made Hermione happy; I can't help but wonder if she's referring to Hermione's formidable intellect compared to Ron's (average, with moments of brilliance).

I love Ron as a character, seriously.

I love Hermione, too.

And I came to enjoy reading many (very excellent!) R/Hr stories after my initial aversion to the ship.

R/Hr totally had to grow on me, I think because I find their relationship so counterintuitive to what my personal definition of love is. I'm not saying I'm right, but it's what feels right to me.

This is long past, but at least certain fans, who once peppered their fellow fans who entertained a different textual interpretation of the relationships in the Harry Potter series than they did with a variety of insults, will know how truly rude and obnoxious their behavior was. I'm thinking of two people in particular, neither of whom will ever read this, fwiw. It was really an affront at the time. All things being even now, though, I say it's water under the bridge.

----

And because it's obligatory for me:

I forgot in my last post to offer up a pair of brand new black, fur lined, slip-on Crocs slippers in US size 6 Mens/8 Womens. Yeah, yeah, I know. They're Crocs. But Crocs are useful for, say, going from the house to the end of the driveway to get the mail or newspaper, or making a quick run to 7-11, etc. If you can stand the fug factor, Crocs are incredibly comfortable. They only come in even sizes, though, and I'm an 8.5 in shoes -- I should've ordered a size 7/9 instead of the 6/8. My mistake. I got them for like $15.00 from Zulily, which is a close-out site that doesn't allow returns -- all sales are final. Since I can't return them, I'm offering them up for free to anyone who wants them. They're unworn and the fur is really soft. Just remember the sizing issue -- I would recommend these for anyone who wears a US womens size 6.5 to 7.5 or a very slim 8. || PICS UNDER THE CUT SO YOU CAN CHECK THEIR CONDITION ||Collapse )
